Does It Make a Difference?

Hmmm…

I haven’t noticed the moho blogosphere light up with this news yet, so I’ll post it:

LDS Church Makes Changes to BKP's Talk

Honestly, I have refrained from commenting on “The Talk,” mostly because I’m feeling rather apathetic at the moment in such regards. Perhaps I’ll discuss my feelings about the whole situation at a later date when I care again ;)

But until then, I don’t think the few changes made in the text version of BKP’s talk makes much of a difference. In fact, as we have already read all over the moho blogs, perhaps the question they took out where Packer asks “Why would our Heavenly Father do that to anyone?” was the most important thing he could have actually asked in that talk!

Anyway, what are your feelings on the changes? Does it really change anything?

I think it does change something - minor, perhaps, but worth thinking of. This could be interpreted a just bureaucratic saving face, and I do believe there is a lot of that. But I think it could also be interpreted that a large population of the Church has conflicted feelings upon this particular position - even perhaps some of the leaders. To me it also demonstrates that the Church does not stand behind a significant part of Packer's comments, namely that homosexuality is biological rather than choice. Which takes the wind out of the sails of those LDS members who do think that sexuality is choice based, and that sexuality can be changed.

It's a small silver lining, but I think there is potential for positive correction and change, and the change of statements could be indicative of this.

Alternatively I could be entirely off base, but I think (especially compared to a few decades ago) the LDS church IS making progress in its unfortunate attitudes about homosexuality. It's slow, but it does appear to be happening.

I thought it was interesting that they took out the part where Packer said the Proclamation on the Family qualified as revelation.

I think its quite normal. A lot of time the speakers Ad-lib, like Hinckley did often. It is normal I think.
